Gary Lee Pope

January 29, 1938 ~ April 10, 2014 (age 76) 76 Years Old
Gary Lee Pope, 76, passed away April 10, 2014, at his home in Huntington Beach, CA after a long battle with Amyloidosis.  Gary was born January 29, 1938, in Oakland, California to Irma Hunt Pope and Carl Leon Pope.  He was the youngest of two children.  Gary was an incredibly hard worker, constantly working various jobs from the age of 8 when he delivered newspapers so he could afford to purchase his favorite candy bars.  He served in the Marine reserves, serving summers and weekends.  Gary attended Fresno State University where he was on the swim team, and earned his degree in Automotive Engineering.  His love of all things automotive led Gary to the world of drag racing where he traveled the countryside competing.  He also loved the art of building his dream roadsters, traveling weekends with his buddy Roy Oto, roadster in tow, showing their work in various car shows.  Gary was an exceptional athlete, enjoying surfing, running, swimming, beach volleyball, snow skiing and scuba diving.  He spent many summers building and running Pro Beach Volleyball tournaments throughout the United States, including a very large and successful event in Hong Kong.  His exceptional talents as an engineer and businessman led him to worldwide travel and experiences with many trips to the Far East, India, Australia and Europe.  Gary had an amazing ability to analyze and discern business matters, as well as engineering and financial issues, and always made time to teach or mentor those he cared about or who showed interest in progressing in their various fields.  He was the ultimate voice of reason.  Gary Pope was a loving, protective husband. He was a 25 year resident of Huntington Beach, CA and is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sandy, his sister Sharron Pope of Walnut Creek, CA, sons Sean Pope of Oceanside, CA  and Cory Pope of Clovis, CA, daughter Amy Tingey of Danville, CA, their spouses, and 11 grandchildren.  He will be sorely missed.

In Lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to The Humane Society or The Cystic Fibrosis foundation in Gary's honor.
