Tribute

Georgia Catherine Schafer, age 92, passed away on Monday, March 2nd, 2020 at Las Palmas Retirement Community in Laguna Woods, California. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 7th, at 10 am at the Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach, California.

Georgia was born on July 26, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska. She and her sister, Flavia, were raised in Omaha by their parents, Henry “Bud” and Flavia Lehmann. Georgia graduated from North High School and went on to graduate from St. Joseph School of Nursing, a legacy school for the Creighton College of Nursing, in 1949. Following her graduation, she married Benedict Schafer of Omaha and raised three children, Catherine, Richard and John. In the 1960s the family moved to southern California where Georgia lived the rest of her life. After coming to California Georgia wanted to further her education and attended California State University in Long Beach, earning a Bachelors degree in social science. Georgia worked as a medical/surgical nurse, an occupational nurse and later retired after working many years as a Medi-Cal Hearings Examiner for The State of California.

In 1984 Georgia lost Ben, her loving life partner. A few years later she met Walter Pilling of Anaheim Hills and they were companions until she passed away. Georgia and Walter belonged to a camper club and enjoyed spending time camping with the club members. They also enjoyed traveling to Europe together. Georgia was fortunate to live a rich and full life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benedict Schafer, her parents, Henry “Bud” and Flavia Lehmann, and her beloved sister, Flavia Robey.  Georgia is survived by her three children, Catherine Schafer of Laguna Niguel, CA, Richard Schafer of Omaha, NE and John Schafer of Dana Point, CA; and five grandchildren: Andrew Schafer, Michael Schafer, Patrick Schafer, Catherine Schafer and Teresa Schafer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice or to The Creighton Scholarship Fund for the College of Nursing. Information on the Creighton Scholarship Fund can be found at the following website:
